Archie*(5), starting Year 2
(July 2020 - Present)

Background
I was contacted by Archie's parents to explain that he was struggling with his learning. This wasn't helped due to the first lockdown during the pandemic. They also explained that his behaviour was becoming poorer the more that he struggled.

How we worked together
We started looking at Phonics, Reading and Maths. I identified that he was struggling to identify the Phase 2 sounds and really hated reading. I also found that he struggled to identify numbers and found letter and number formation impossible.

When we first started (face to face) we played relaxed games and activities. We concentrated on:
-
the reading skills he needed
-
phonics
-
number and letter formation
-
number skills.
I based these activities around his favourite things to get him excited about his learning again.

As the pandemic continued it started to look like face to face would become impossible to continue. I began to run trial sessions with BitPaper (my online platform) , at home so Archie would be confident if we did have to fully switch to online.
In November, all sessions were moved online and Archie was able to navigate the platform easily and even teach his parents how to use it. We continued his sessions, transferring the games and activities he was used to, increasing the amount of work he could now confidently work through. Archie has continued to progress.

The Outcome

We are now working on Phase 5 sounds and he is confidently attacking the Year 1 words. Archie now enjoys reading and I love getting regular updates of what he has now read easily when he is not with me.

At school, his teachers have moved him up a number of book bands and have commented on how much he has improved in his maths lessons. His behaviour is now much more positive as he feels confident to learn and now understands that a mistake can be an opportunity.

I love working with Archie as he loves a giggle and I cannot wait to see what he will achieve next.
